August 2006 Noatak River Float Trip
This slideshow features many of the highlights from the Herriott brother's 19 day float trip on the Noatak River in Northwest Alaska. Much of the 435 river miles of the Noatak lie in Gates of the Arctic National Park and Noatak National Preserve. The Noatak River basin is the "largest undisturbed watershed in North America." This Wild and Scenic River is also designated as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

This panoramic view well depicts the lay of the land. The Noatak River lies in the main valley and flows to the bottom left corner of the photograph (which is where our camp on the gravel bar is). Twelve Mile Creek is seen in the leftmost portion of the image. In the center skyline of the image (blanketed with snow and clouds) lies Igikpak (8,510 feet), the tallest mountain in this part of the Brooks Range. We plan to spend the next three days backpacking around the valleys and ridges near Igikpak.
