August 2006 Noatak River Float Trip
This single muskox was an amazing sight to see. We had seen a group of three from the air on our flight to Twelve Mile Creek, but seeing this icon of the Ice Age, this beastliest of beasts up close was fantastic. So unshapely are these rugged mounds of fur that when Ian spotted this critter lounging on the gravel bar he only casually mentioned Hey, that brown thing over there looks sort of like a bear. Trystan squinted and then responded, I think its a muskox lying down. No sooner had he said this the beast took to his feet and mozzied over to the spot he is at in this picture. The bull all but ignored us as he rubbed Qiviut off on the willow in front of him. After about half an hour he shuffled off about 50 yards and Ian collected a small sample of Qiviut that had been rubbed off on that very willow!
