August 2006 Noatak River Float Trip
This slideshow features many of the highlights from the Herriott brother's 19 day float trip on the Noatak River in Northwest Alaska. Much of the 435 river miles of the Noatak lie in Gates of the Arctic National Park and Noatak National Preserve. The Noatak River basin is the "largest undisturbed watershed in North America." This Wild and Scenic River is also designated as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

As Day 14 (August 25) came upon us we had been seeing progressively fewer and fewer caribou daily. The previous day we had only seen a handful of solo cows. By the afternoon of Day 14 we had seen no caribou although we did begin to seen more poplar trees, larger alders (very large alder shown in this photo), and even a couple birch on south facing bluffs. We disembarked on the bank here because we had spotted the first white spruce tree of the trip!
