A small depression in the granite allowed for a muddy puddle to develop and then freeze overnight. The elongation of ice crystals hoisted the mud up a few centimeters . . . a phenomenon known as "needle-ice" that occurs only under very specific temperature conditions. If your interested, Google it, as I can't possibly explain it sufficiently here.
